NC Newsline, a nonpartisan, nonprofit news organization dedicated to fearless reporting and incisive commentary that shines a light on injustice, holds public officials accountable, and helps improve the quality of life for all North Carolinians, is seeking a reporter to join its award-winning team

Based in Raleigh, NC Newsline is part of States Newsroom, the nation’s largest state-focused nonprofit news organization, with reporting from every capital.

For Newsline, the reporter may cover the 2024 elections, the legislature, climate and the environment among other topics. They’ll produce daily and enterprise stories, take photos and share stories on social media. We are looking for a reporter who can provide important information to readers about elected officials, how public money is spent at the state level, and the ways that policy decisions affect families and communities across the Old North State.

The ideal candidate will know how to track trending topics and hold officials accountable through deep source building and public records requests. Their reporting will take readers beyond press releases, providing a deeper understanding of how decisions are made in Raleigh and how they affect North Carolinians from Boone to the beaches.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

• Produce regular, high-quality reporting on North Carolina state government, officials, politics and policy
• Contribute regularly to Newsline’s briefs section
• Generate story ideas in collaboration with colleagues
• Pursue story leads, both self-generated and as assigned, with self-direction and solid news judgment
• Approach assignments on deadline with strong communication and follow through with the editor and colleagues
• Collaborate with other reporters on projects and to share research and pertinent knowledge when/if available
• Take photos and video to illustrate and amplify stories

QUALIFICATIONS AND COMPENSATION

The ideal candidate will have at least three years of previous news reporting and/or editing experience (student experience counts), sound news judgment, flexibility, and the ability to manage ongoing and short-term projects with strong attention to detail and accuracy.

Knowledge of North Carolina’s political landscape and leaders, previous digital, photography and/or videography experience, and an entrepreneurial spirit are strong assets. NC Newsline journalists are expected to produce at least four posts per week.

Bilingual candidates are encouraged to apply. Authorization to work in the United States is required. All States Newsroom employees are required to be fully vaccinated for COVID within 30 days of hire.

The salary for this position starts at $52,000 and rises with experience. Our generous benefits package includes:
