States Newsroom Launches Source New Mexico

Experienced Local Journalist Marisa Demarco to Lead the New Outlet

ALBUQUERQUE, NM – Today, States Newsroom, the nation’s leading network of state-based nonprofit news outlets, announced the launch of Source New Mexico. This newest outlet is the organization’s 24th and will be led by veteran Albuquerque-based reporter Marisa Demarco.

Source New Mexico will be a dedicated resource for the state’s residents — providing unflinching coverage of COVID response and health care, access to education, tribal affairs, climate change and industrial regulation, police accountability, criminal legal reform, the impacts of immigration policies and more from across the region.

“In forming this team and developing Source New Mexico’s focus, I’m really thinking about how exactly we work in service of our community. Great reporting, thoughtful columns and analysis — those should be a resource, the information people need to make strong choices about their world,” said Marisa Demarco, Editor-in-Chief. “This work is also about centering and respecting the people of New Mexico — their experiences and expertise — in the stories we tell. They’re the real source.”

Demarco brings nearly two decades of reporting experience across New Mexico’s print and radio outlets, including the Albuquerque Tribune and KUNM News. Her career is stacked with leadership experience–from founding the New Mexico Compass to serving as executive producer of “Your NM Government” and “No More Normal.”

Additional seasoned journalists join the Source New Mexico’s staff, including:

  • Austin Fisher, who is based in Santa Fe and has over five years of experience reporting on state news, writing for the Rio Grande Sun and the Santa Fe Reporter. He hails from Kansas, where he previously wrote for the Garden-City Telegram and the Topeka Capital-Journal.
  • Shaun Griswold, a citizen of the Pueblo of Laguna, who most recently covered Indigenous affairs for New Mexico In Depth. He brings more than a decade of print and broadcast journalism experience to Source New Mexico
  • Patrick Lohmann, an award-winning journalist with 14 years of experience. He most recently spent six years reporting for the Syracuse Post-Standard. Prior to that, he worked for the Albuquerque Journal and the Daily Lobo.

This fall, States Newsroom plans to add an Oregon outlet to its growing media network.

“We’re pleased to add another high-quality, non-partisan news source to States Newsroom’s network.” said Chris Fitzsimon, Director and Publisher of States Newsroom. “We have no doubt Demarco’s team will bring unparalleled reporting to New Mexico.”

Previously, Fitzsimon founded and led NC Policy Watch, North Carolina’s leading news and commentary outlet, before launching what was to become States Newsroom in 2017.

States Newsroom is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that is funded exclusively by the generous contributions of readers and philanthropists. States Newsroom is committed to supporting fact-based, non-partisan news to the public at no cost and ad-free.
