States Newsroom Launches Daily Newsletter Tracking Reproductive Rights Changes in the States Post-Roe
Newsletter will include a digest of stories covering new laws, challenges, and stories from all 50 states.
WASHINGTON – States Newsroom today launched Reproductive Rights Today, a comprehensive newsletter to help readers keep track of the moving picture around reproductive rights across the United States. More than a dozen U.S. states now have strict bans on abortion in the aftermath of the U.S. Supreme Court decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization. The ruling set off efforts around the country to further restrict the procedure – or enhance protections for it – and sparked new debates about access to contraception. This newsletter will bring you timely developments from the states every weekday morning.

Reproductive Rights Today will be authored by Mel Leonor Barclay, most recently a statehouse reporter in Virginia for the Richmond Times-Dispatch with experience covering government from city council to the White House.
“Since Roe v. Wade was overturned by the Supreme Court in June, we have seen states move quickly to pass new laws, or interpret what their old laws mean in this new context,” said Chris Fitzsimon, Director and Publisher of States Newsroom. “With consequential actions and events happening each day on this front, it can be difficult for readers to keep up. That’s why we’re launching Reproductive Rights Today to tell the important stories coming out of states across the country in post-Roe America.”
The launch of Reproductive Rights Today comes not long after Pew Research Center cited States Newsroom and other nonprofit newsrooms as key to filling the void in statehouse coverage left by staffing cuts at legacy media outlets. According to Pew, the overall percentage of reporters working for nonprofit newsrooms in the statehouse press corps has more than tripled since 2014 and now makes up the largest portion of statehouse reporters in 10 states and the second largest in 17 states.
Last year, States Newsroom announced major plans to expand its footprint to have independent newsrooms in roughly 40 states and launched News from the States, a comprehensive source for statehouse news across the country. States Newsroom is set to continue its rapid expansion this year to Kentucky and South Dakota. Recently, the organization expanded its reach by launching new content sharing partnerships with eight independent nonprofit outlets, including the Texas Tribune, to host their reporting on News from the States.
