Report for America is a national service program that places talented emerging journalists in local newsrooms to report on under-covered topics and communities across the United States and its territories. States Newsroom’s The Missouri Independent, Iowa Capital Dispatch, Minnesota Reformer, Louisiana Illuminator and Tennessee Lookout have all been selected as new host newsroom partners over the past three years.
Local Reporting Network
States Newsroom’s Source New Mexico and reporter Patrick Lohmann were selected for ProPublica’s Local Reporting Network in 2023. Together we produced the The Long Burn series covering the response to New Mexico’s largest wildfire, which the federal government accidentally set. Disaster aid has been hard to get and slow to arrive, and residents face a long journey to rebuild. Their joint coverage of the disaster response has continued in 2024.
Local Investigations Fellowship
States Newsroom’s national health reporter Shalina Chatlani was selected to be a New York Times Local Investigations Fellow to examine Mississippi’s state health care system. The fellowship program is led by Dean Baquet, the former executive editor of The New York Times. The fellowship gives journalists the opportunity to produce signature investigative work focused on their state or region. Chatlani’s reporting will be published by The Times and States Newsroom.
Special Series
MuckRock and The Associated Press worked with The Missouri Independent on what The New York Times called a “blockbuster report” which meant combing through thousands of pages of previously-unreleased government records that show radioactive waste was known to pose a threat to people living near Coldwater Creek as early as 1949. But federal officials repeatedly wrote potential risks off as ‘slight,’ ‘minimal’ or ‘low-level.’ It has turned into an ongoing series that follows the federal government’s response to the revelations buried in that document trove.

NPR Midwest Newsroom and The Missouri Independent worked together on Unleaded, which documented widespread lead contamination across Missouri and Kansas as well as Iowa and Nebraska despite ample documentation of the harm it causes children in those states.
Special Series
The Lost Children is a joint investigation by South Dakota Searchlight and the Argus Leader exploring the causes, effects and potential solutions to the decades-long overrepresentation of Native American children in South Dakota’s foster care system.
States Newsroom journalists have also collaborated on stories with peers across many news organizations.
