Reporter, Minnesota Reformer

Join the Minnesota Reformer and help Minnesotans understand the state policy that affects their lives.

The Minnesota Reformer is a nonprofit newsroom that in just two years has shaken up Minnesota politics and media with hard hitting stories on policing and race, Minnesota’s emerging extreme right wing ecosystem, sexual harassment at the Legislature and an oil pipeline’s threat to clean water. Since launching in January 2020, our work has garnered national and local awards. We’re part of the expanding network of nonprofit news sites around the country called States Newsroom, which has a diversity, equity, inclusion and justice mission as we break news on government, politics and policy.

We’re looking for a reporter, to be based in St. Paul, who loves to dig in on government and policy. Our focus is investigative and enterprise journalism, but the job also entails writing shorter pieces and actively promoting your work in other media, including social media.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Produce regular, high-quality reporting on issues facing Minnesota
  • Contribute regularly to outlet’s briefs section
  • Generate story ideas with the editor in chief
  • Pursue story leads, both self-generated and as assigned, with self-direction and solid news judgment
  • Approach assignments on deadline with strong communication and follow through with the editor and colleagues
  • Collaborate with other reporters on projects and to share research and pertinent knowledge when/if available
  • Establish and expand digital media presence representing the outlet and use personal social media to amplify the site’s content, presence and voice
  • Take photos and video to illustrate and amplify stories

We’re looking for candidates with at least three years previous news reporting and/or editing experience (student journalism counts), sound news judgment, flexibility, and the ability to manage ongoing and short-term projects with strong attention to detail and accuracy. Bilingual candidates are encouraged to apply.
