Kansas Reflector Reporter Intern

Join the Kansas Reflector as a Summer Reporter Intern to gain experience in a fast-paced newsroom that delivers accountability reporting on state government, policy and politics in the Sunflower State.

Based in Topeka, the Reporter Intern will work full-time alongside professional news staff to provide statewide political, environmental and general assignment coverage for the Kansas Reflector this summer. The intern will have the opportunity to write articles on topics determined in consultation with the editor in chief, and will end the internship with a portfolio of published news articles. The intern will also assist Kansas Reflector journalists with photography, data analysis and visual content for the outlet’s website and newsletter. This is an excellent and challenging opportunity designed for college students or recent grads who are interested in pursuing a career in political journalism.

Responsibilities and Tasks

    • Under direction from Editor-in-Chief, produce high-quality reporting on issues facing Kansas, including but not limited to public policy matters and people’s lives
    • Draft content for the outlet’s website
    • Work closely with the editorial team to help generate and story ideas
    • Pursue story leads with strong self-direction, news judgment and foundation in Associated Press style
    • Assist reporters with research, data analysis, data visualization, photography and pertinent knowledge when/if available

Qualifications

We’re looking for current college students or recent grads with previous news reporting and/or editing experience, sound news judgment, flexibility, and strong attention to detail and accuracy.

The compensation for this position is $15/hour and the intern will be expected to work 40 hours/week for a 10-week term.
