Human Resources Manager

States Newsroom, an innovative network of state-based news outlets focused on connecting people to the state policies that shape their daily lives, is seeking a Human Resources Manager to oversee hiring and onboarding processes and lead retention efforts for our growing organization.

States Newsroom‘s HR Manager will report to the Operations Director and work closely with the Equity, Inclusion, and Strategic Initiatives Director and HR/Operations Assistant to help design, implement, and maintain systems and processes around recruitment, onboarding, performance management, internal communications, expense reimbursement, and other personnel policies and procedures.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for personnel performance matters, and work with supervisors to design, implement, and track staff performance reviews and improvement plan
  • Provide support and guidance to the HR/Operations team and other staff when complex, specialized, and/or sensitive questions and issues arise; may be required to administer and execute routine tasks in delicate circumstances such as providing reasonable accommodations, investigating allegations of wrongdoing, and terminations
  • Lead the regular updating and maintenance of the Employee Handbook and staff resource portal
  • Review and approve payroll on a bimonthly basis
  • Oversee the annual performance management process, including the development of evaluation tools that provide meaningful feedback to employees
  • Draft and disseminate all-staff communications regarding HR policies, procedures, and reminders
  • Oversee the new hire onboarding process, including new hire orientation, to ensure the compliance and timely submission of new employees’ paperwork
  • Oversee employee disciplinary meetings, terminations, and investigations
  • Ensure the organization and maintenance of personnel records
  • Maintain knowledge of trends, best practices, regulatory changes, and new technologies in human resources, talent management, and employment law
  • With Operations team, create and implement new processes for employee data collection and other HR initiatives
  • Assist employees with using States Newsroom systems, including Paychex Flex, Salsa (CRM), Expensify, Slack, Microsoft Office, the employee portal and other new systems and processes
  • Other tasks as needed on a regular or fill-in basis, including drafting offer letters, supporting recruitment efforts, and approving employee expense reimbursement and reconciliation requests

WHO YOU ARE

  • You have at least five years of Human Resources experience, ideally in a nonprofit setting
  • You hold SHRM certification or another professional credential in Human Resources (such as an associate’s or bachelor’s degree)
  • You are a leader who is passionate about creating a supportive, inclusive workplace
  • You are a quick learner who is energized by training and connecting with employees from a wide range of backgrounds
  • You have strong communication and writing skills and are able to communicate clearly and patiently about complicated, sensitive subjects
  • You have proficiency with Google suite and ideally, familiarity with WordPress, Mailchimp, and Paychex Flex
  • You are able to manage multiple projects simultaneously while maintaining attention to detail
  • You are self-motivated with strong organizational skills
  • You believe in the importance of state government coverage, especially in how decisions and policies can affect historically marginalized communities, and you want to help journalists share those stories

Authorization to work in the United States. All States Newsroom employees are required to be fully vaccinated within 30 days of hire.
