Deputy Editor, Arizona Mirror

Join the Arizona Mirror as Deputy Editor to provide political and government coverage that connects state policy to Arizonans’ lives in a dynamic and supportive Phoenix newsroom.

The AZ Mirror Deputy Editor will develop news sources, monitor news developments, and report for the outlet’s dynamic website as well as distribute site content on social media. The Deputy Editor will produce investigative and enterprise reporting on topics determined in consultation with the Editor-in-Chief. In addition, the Deputy Editor will mentor less experienced reporters and assist the Editor-in-Chief in making key decisions regarding the content and tone of the site’s coverage.

The Mirror is part of States Newsroom, a growing network of nonprofit news sites covering state government.

Responsibilities

Specific duties will be tailored to the successful candidate’s strengths but could encompass:

  • Working with our team of talented reporters to plan and produce groundbreaking enterprise coverage of Arizona’s biggest policy and political debates
  • Provide back up with editing and other organizational duties with Editor-in-Chief
  • Produce regular, high quality reporting on issues facing Arizona, including quick-turn stories, enterprise and investigative work
  • Contribute 3-5 bylines per week on average
  • Assisting in the production of our daily newsletter and sharing Mirror content on social media
  • Establish and expand social media presence representing the outlet
  • Assist the Editor-in-Chief in directing and supporting newer reporters
  • Assist the Editor-in-Chief in maintaining relationships and soliciting content from freelancers
  • Fill in as Editor when the Editor-in-Chief is out

Qualifications

  • At least five years of news reporting and/or editing experience
  • Knowledge of Arizona’s political landscape and leaders
  • The ability to bring out the best in a news story through constructive feedback and guidance
  • Strong news judgment and a keen eye for what our competitors are missing
  • A commitment to fair, honest and accurate journalism
  • Familiarity with AP style
  • The ability to write clean copy on deadline
  • A desire to polish rough drafts into gems during editing

Salary & Compensation

The minimum salary for this position is $65,000 and rises with experience. Our generous benefits package includes:
