Join States Newsroom as a Washington, D.C. Reporter to provide our state news sites with national stories that are free to read and republish from Alaska to Florida.

States Newsroom, the nation’s largest state-focused nonprofit news organization, is seeking a Washington, D.C. Reporter to provide state-focused national coverage of a broad range of stories for our states.

This reporter will produce daily and enterprise journalism on topics including congressional actions, White House briefings and actions, Supreme Court cases, Cabinet officials, protests, conferences, and other events/topics determined in consultation with the Washington Bureau Chief.

Job Responsibilities

  • Write trend and feature stories in addition to regular spot news updates as events require; lead or participate in projects and long-term enterprise
  • Generate story ideas with the Washington Bureau Chief
  • Pursue story leads with strong self-direction and news judgment
  • Collaborate with other DC Bureau reporters in a team atmosphere
  • On occasion shoot straightforward photos for use by states
  • Use social media to amplify network content

Qualifications

We are looking for someone with 3-5 years of Washington reporting and/or editing experience (student journalism counts), as well as knowledge of the federal government, Congress, and the national political landscape.

The ideal candidate is a self-starter with sound news judgment and the ability to simultaneously manage ongoing short- and long-term projects. Previous digital, photography and/or videography experience would be a strong asset.

The minimum salary for this position is $65,000 and goes up with experience. Our generous benefits package includes:
