Editor in Chief, Topeka

States Newsroom, a network of nonprofit news outlets focused on state politics and policy, is seeking an experienced state political journalist as Editor in Chief for Kansas.

The Editor will have committed funding for staffing, website, and overhead expenses. Marketing and editorial support are provided by a headquarters office. Compensation includes a competitive salary and a generous benefits package.

The Editor will be based in Topeka and will hire and oversee three reporters, write commentary, and be an opinion leader in Kansas. The outlet will provide investigative and in-depth daily reporting as well as commentary and analysis of the state’s most critical challenges.

The Editor will also work with policy experts in Kansas to feature their content on a dynamic blog and the outlet’s robust social media presence. The Editor will work closely with States Newsroom and network peers in other states to share best practices and build relationships that help refine the outlet’s operations.

The ideal candidate will have extensive reporting and/or editing experience, an entrepreneurial spirit, and a deep knowledge of Kansas’ political history and media landscape.
